Prosecutor Seeks Prison For Officer In BART Shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors are asking a judge to issue a prison sentence for a white former transit officer convicted in the 2009 videotaped shooting death of an unarmed black man in Oakland.

The recommendation filed Tuesday in Los Angeles argues against defense's request for probation for Johannes Mehserle. Prosecution did not specify how much prison time it wanted the judge to issue.

Mehserle faces up to 14 years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 5

Mehserle was convicted in July of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 22-year-old Oscar Grant on New Year's Day 2009. The shooting on an Oakland train platform was videotaped by a handful of bystanders.

The trial was moved from Alameda County to Los Angeles because of racial tension and extensive media coverage in the Bay Area.
