Man Dies, Woman Burned In Apparent Copper Wire Theft Attempt

SOUTH GATE (CBS) — Police say a man died and a woman was critically injured Saturday while trying to steal copper wire from an electrical vault that exploded.

The explosion was reported at 4:14 p.m. near 3064 Firestone Blvd. Arriving officers found two people next to a burning electrical vault on a vacant property.

The man died at the scene and the woman was taken to St. Francis Medical Center with critical burns.

Investigators believe they were trying to steal copper wire from the electrical vault when the explosion happened.

Police said there were two small children in a truck parked near the victims. They were taken into protective custody until relatives could be located.

Police did not say whether the four people were related.

never be happy about someone getting hurt.nobody should have to face what this woman is going to have to face. its sad that for some wire that whole family will suffer. i wish whats left of that family much luck & may god bless them

    • M

You should be ashamed of yourself for saying such awful things about these people. They have suffered greatly for this mistake they have made. I believe in karma also, and I believe that you will get what YOU DESREVE for being so evil minded toward others. Take the hate out of your heart, you strange negative person. You posted that comment with so much confidence. Shame on you.

Unfortunately their story will only end up in 1000 ways to die, and this wound sounds very stupid. Especially with their children waiting in the car while they do a crime.

  • denny

    Just pure stpidity

  • Rawlings H

    Desparation breeds stupidity
Just trying to feed a family

  • Larry P.

    Good point Rawlings.

  • Chris

sad but true the economy is driving those trying to feed the family to desperation God bless them

  • vudu

People have been cutting copper from live lines since well before the economy tumbled. Greed is usually the motivator, not survival. Putting food on the table MAY have been this couples motivation, but there are many other, far safer ways to steal things. They got what they deserved, now maybe the kids will have a chance to be raised by someone with common sense.

  • danny

who are you to say they got what they deserved ! when did you become GOD ? do you know their situation ? our congressman, senators, elected officials , steal more then we know, sould they be electrocuted ? should their children be left to foster homes? should their wive’s be maimed for life ?wake up you IDIOT, and think before you speak !

    • vudu

I did think. I don’t believe in god, and I don’t care what their situation was. If a person is going to commit a crime, they are responsible for their own saftey and deserved of whatever consequences befall them for it. You are looking at this from the perspective of the punishment doesn’t fit the crime, and to view it as such, you would be right. But the law/courts didn’t execute the man, and they didn’t electrocute the woman. The criminals did it to themselves and as such, they are not deserving of any sympathy.

      • M

        You people are so AWFUL!

  • Jz

    Sympathy for the kids.

A THIEF is a THIEF!!! They knew it was stealing, they knew it was against the law.If they still decide to commit a crime, anything from arrest to death can and sometimes will happen. No sympathy from here,I would suspect HE planned it and SHE knew it was illegal. The kids are the “Victims” here. There are plenty of photos on the internet of other dummies trying to steal copper wires and getting blown up too. This is not a first.
