Hip And Knee Replacement: Separating Facts From Fiction

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — “I’m too young to need a knee replacement!”

Well, that’s one myth down. You’re never too young to need a joint replaced.

Dr. Thomas Schmalzried, Director of the Joint Replacement Institute at St. Vincent Medical Center, was an in-studio guest on the KCAL 9 News at Noon Tuesday to separate fact from fiction re knee and hip replacement.

Dr. Schmalzried also discussed an open house at St. Vincent’s.

On October 20th from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., the public is invited to visit the Joint Replacement Institute at St. Vincent’s where guests can meet Dr. Tom and the other JRI doctors, ask questions and learn about the latest advancements in joint replacement.

RSVP is essential 866-478-8462.

I saw the interview on KCAL Tuesday afternoon re joint replacement and was disappointed that no one thought to ask the doctor about the recall of DuPuy hip replacements. There have been ads all over tv, mostly from lawyers trawling for clients to file lawsuits, but did your anchors not see any of them? I think viewers would have benefited from knowing what percentage of replacements are affected, and whether the recall has caused fear among people needing a new hip, leading them to reconsider the surgery.
