LA Teachers Union Opposes Layoff Agreement
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Unified School District's teacher union says a proposed agreement that would change how teachers are laid off in the nation's second-largest school district is the wrong solution for schools.
In a statement Wednesday, United Teachers Los Angeles says it has serious concerns about the settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California approved Tuesday by the school board.
Among other things, UTLA says it is concerned that low-performing schools will be left with a higher concentration of less experienced teachers. It also says the settlement does nothing to solve ongoing staffing problems at hard-to-staff schools.
UTLA says it will meet with the board and the ACLU to voice its objections.
The settlement must be approved by a judge.
