Attorney General Candidates Clash In Debate

DAVIS, Calif. (AP) — The two major candidates for state attorney general have clashed on everything from the environment to the death penalty.

Republican Steve Cooley and Democrat Kamala Harris participated in their only scheduled debate Tuesday at the University of California, Davis, School of Law.

Cooley, who serves as Los Angeles district attorney, painted Harris as soft on crime for her personal opposition to capital punishment.

Harris, who is San Francisco's district attorney, portrayed Cooley as a throwback with his reluctance to endorse California's greenhouse gas reduction efforts.

The two prosecutors are vying to replace Jerry Brown, who is running for governor.
