Riverside To Review Police Conduct During Raid

RIVERSIDE (AP) — Riverside's police chief says he is investigating whether some of his officers destroyed makeshift homes, food, clothing and bicycles belonging to homeless living near the Santa Ana River.

Chief Sergio Diaz told the Riverside Press-Enterprise he had received complaints about the way the homeless were treated by officers who raided the encampment Sept. 29.

Diaz says his officers have to monitor the homeless and move them out of no trespassing areas, but destruction of property is not allowed. People who live at the encampment say officers slashed their bicycle tires and threw clothes and bedding in the river.

Diaz says the internal investigation is in the early stages and no one has been disciplined.
