Drug Take-Back Program Nets 8,000 Pounds Of Meds

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California residents handed over more than 8,000 pounds of unused or expired prescription drugs during a nationwide drug take-back program.

The Drug Enforcement Administration said Wednesday that 36 local police and sheriff departments participated in the Sept. 25 event, hosting 78 collection sites in eight counties.

The DEA says many of the law enforcement agencies plan to continue the program at the local level.

Officials say unused or expired prescription medications can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse and are a public safety hazard.
