Oaks Miracle Hurts Long Beach Poly

Rahshaun Haylock

(CBS)- It was just the first week of Marmonte League play and just Week Two of the high school football season but already we have a candidate for game of the year.  Oaks Christian's 33-32 overtime win over St. Bonaventure, Friday night at Ventura High School was a game head coach Bill Redell called "the greatest comeback victory in Oaks Christian history," according to the LA Times.

The short-handed Lions, on the road, overcame three Trevor Gretzky interceptions and a 26-14 deficit with just 3:36 remaining in regulation.  Senior, backup QB Richie Harrington entered the game in the 3rd quarter and Oaks down 19-0 and guided the comeback.  Oaks was already without TE/DE Dillon van der Wal (leg) and WR Jordan Payton (ankle), who were inactive for the game.

Not only did the lost hurt St. Bonaventure's chances of winning the Marmonte League and keeping their streak of 14 consecutive league titles (on the field) alive.  Of course, the Seraphs had to forfeit their 2009 Channel League crown for using an ineligible player.  The Seraphs loss also hurt Long Beach Poly's State Bowl chances.

If you're a Jackrabbit fan, you were hoping the Seraphs would run the table through the tough Marmonte League.  If Poly could win out, the one loss on their record wouldn't have looked too bad.  But the Seraphs lost at home to a short-handed Oaks Christian team which owns a bad loss to Alemany on their resume.

Poly started the season with national title hopes.  Now, thanks to an Oaks miracle, the state chances look a little bleek.
