Foam Container Ban Approved L.A. County Facilities

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a nod to environmentalists, Los Angeles County supervisors have voted to ban foam food containers at most county facilities, including restaurants, catering trucks, hospitals, golf courses and concessions.

The Board of Supervisors approved the ban Tuesday and ordered a study on implementing a wider ban. The Los Angeles Times says Department of Public Works officials and the county counsel will report back in a year on imposing the ban on private restaurants and other businesses.

Foam containers are prominent flotsam in storm drains and the debris washes out to sea, killing birds and marine animals.

Foam food containers are already banned in Berkeley, Calabasas, Laguna Beach, Malibu, Newport Beach, Oakland, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Santa Monica and West Hollywood.
