WALNUT (AP) — A Southern California college wrestler collapsed during a weekend tournament and later died.
Rio Hondo College president Ted Martinez Jr. said 20-year-old Jesus Cruz, a popular second-year wrestler and captain of the Whittier school’s wrestling team, died Saturday after collapsing at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
Cruz was on the mat with an opponent when he collapsed. The Los Angeles Times says he was pronounced dead at San Dimas Community Hospital.
The remainder of the all-day tournament was canceled.
Grief counselors are planning to meet with Rio Hondo coaches, players and students.
