LA Police Chief Vows To Speed Up Investigation

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck promises to accelerate the department's investigation into the fatal police shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant.

The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that Beck told the civilian board overseeing the LAPD that the inquiry into the shooting of Manuel Jaminez would be finished much sooner than the eight months it typically takes investigators.

The killing of Jaminez sparked three nights of protests that sometimes turned violent. Activists say the shooting of Jaminez, who police say was drunk and armed with a knife, was unjustified and he should have been disarmed without being killed.

Also Tuesday, a coalition of activist groups wrote to the district attorney requesting a criminal investigation into the shooting.
