Man Arrested In Kentucky For 1988 SoCal Murders

APPLE VALLEY (AP) — Authorities have arrested a man in Kentucky in connection with the 1988 murder of San Bernardino County couple.

Harold David Toney, 59, was arrested Saturday after investigators with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department went through cold case files and uncovered new evidence.

The couple, 72-year-old Hulon Hughes and 61-year-old Elaine Hughes were shot to death in their Apple Valley home.

Toney was arrested at the time but was never charged in the killing.

In April, cold case detectives reviewed the Hughes file as part of a federal DNA grant.

After conducting more interviews, they allegedly learned from friends of Toney that he had described carrying out the murders.

An extradition hearing is scheduled for Sept. 13.
