Officials Rescue 5 Boaters During Catalina Canoe Race

SAN PEDRO (CNS/CBS) — Five people had to be rescued today when their canoe capsized during the Catalina U.S. Championship Outrigger Canoe Race just north of Avalon, Coast Guard officials said.

Anearby race safety vessel responded the scene after some bystanders called for help when they saw the canoe flip, dumping all five boaters into the water.

The Coast Guard sent out a boat and a helicopter to assist in the rescue.

Everyone in the group was wearing a life jacket and no one needed medical attention, officials said.

Coast Guard officials warned all boaters and paddlers to remember how dangerous it is going out onto the water without wearing a life jacket.
