LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Many Southern Californians got a head start as Friday marked one of the busiest travel days, according to the experts.

TripAdvisor surveyed 2,000 U.S. travelers and found many are taking to the highways for the long weekend.

The surveyed revealed – compared to last year – less people are traveling out. But here in Los Angeles, many have travel plans. In fact, 66 percent plan to drive to their destination and 38 percent plan to fly.

The top destinations by car include San Diego, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Carlsbad and Big Bear.

Napa, Phoenix, Arizona and even Denver, Colorado are among the top destinations by plane.

Labor Day weekend also marks the kick off the college football season and a rise in cookouts, with more than 55 million pounds of charcoal is expected to be used this weekend.
