LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles gang member who killed a 3-week-old baby during a shooting near MacArthur Park has been sentenced to more than 51 years in prison.

Twenty-one-year-old Giovanni Macedo was sentenced Tuesday after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder. He’s the fifth person sentenced in a 2007 attack that killed Luis Garcia and wounded a street vendor, Francisco Clemente.

Prosecutors say Macedo shot Clemente four times because he refused to pay gang members a weekly “rent” to work on their turf. The baby, who was next to Clemente, was shot once in the chest.

Two other gang members were sentenced to life in prison earlier this month. Two other men were sentenced in July to 11 years and 13 years in prison.

A sixth man awaits sentencing.
