AP Interview: Boxer Defends Approach On Economy

SAN FRANCISCO - Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer is defending her party's big-spending approach to attacking the recession, even as the latest economic data suggest a sputtering recovery.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Boxer said she is not sugarcoating the severity of the recession, acknowledging these are "tough, tough, tough times."

Economic reports out this week show the recovery has slowed and that not enough private-sector jobs are being created to counter layoffs.

Yet Boxer says voters who will decide whether she is re-elected to a fourth Senate term in November understand that the economy began tanking under the Bush administration.

She says her opponent, Republican Carly Fiorina, represents a return to the Bush-era policies of deregulation and tax cuts for the wealthy.
